Dolphin watching on the Costa del Sol: 3 harbours to choose from

The Alborán Sea washes the whole Costa del Sol and is one of the most cetacean-rich areas in Europe. We sail out to see them from three different harbours, each with its own character. Pick the one nearest your accommodation and enjoy the sea.

Why the Alborán Sea is a top spot for dolphins

The Alborán is where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean mix, and that clash of waters creates huge biological richness. Several species of dolphins and other cetaceans pass through and live here all year round. From the Costa del Sol you have direct access to this area, and depending on which harbour you leave from you'll find a more sheltered or a deeper sea, with different species.

Choose your departure harbour

No harbour is better than another: there's the one that suits you best for where you're staying and what you're after. Here's what each offers.

Puerto Marina (Benalmádena)

Puerto Marina (Benalmádena)

Sheltered waters and a short trip, 15 minutes from Málaga city. The most comfortable harbour and the favourite for going with children.

Puerto de la Duquesa (Manilva)

Puerto de la Duquesa (Manilva)

The closest to the Strait, with deep water. The one offering the most variety of species, including the remote chance of orca in summer.

Estepona marina

Estepona marina

Beside the underwater canyons of the Guadiaro. A good middle ground for variety, with a lovely old town for afterwards.

All the species you can see

These are the cetaceans and marine reptiles that appear in the Alborán Sea off the Costa del Sol. The odds of each change by harbour and season, but all have been seen on our trips.

Bottlenose dolphin swimming in the Alborán SeaCommon

Bottlenose dolphin

Tursiops truncatus

The most common and coastal. Curious about boats, it's seen all year at all three harbours. Almost certain on a trip in season.

Group of striped dolphins leaping in deep waterFrequent

Striped dolphin

Stenella coeruleoalba

A deep-water species, travelling in large, very active groups. More frequent the further west, in Manilva and Estepona.

Common dolphins with their distinctive hourglass patternSeasonal

Common dolphin

Delphinus delphis

Recognisable by the hourglass pattern on its flanks. It appears seasonally, in fast-moving groups crossing the area.

Pilot whales at the surface of the Alborán SeaOccasional

Long-finned pilot whale

Globicephala melas

Larger and darker than a dolphin, it lives in deep water. More likely near the Strait, from Manilva or Estepona.

Orca dorsal fin breaking the surfaceRare (Jul–Aug)

Orca

Orcinus orca

The orcas of the Strait follow the tuna in summer and rarely come close. It's only a real possibility from the westernmost harbours, like Manilva.

Loggerhead turtle floating at the surfaceFrequent

Loggerhead turtle

Caretta caretta

Not a cetacean, but one of the loveliest sightings. Common in summer, resting at the surface at all three harbours.

When is the best time

Spring (Apr–Jun)

The sea calms and warms. Activity returns along with the first bottlenose calves. Good trips and fewer people than high summer.

Summer (Jul–Sep)

Peak season and the greatest variety: striped dolphins, turtles and, near the Strait, the remote chance of pilot whales and orcas. Best to book ahead.

Autumn (Oct–Nov)

The water is still mild and there are fewer boats. One of the calmest, most rewarding times, especially in Estepona.

Real reviews from all three harbours.

All great, Aitor took us out on his catamaran for 3 wonderful hours! And he made sure we got to enjoy being right next to the Málaga dolphin. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic day on board, we saw loads of dolphins and our two captains looked after us wonderfully! :) We made three stops where we could swim and try paddle surf. They even gave us ice for the cool box. Thanks Ramón and Sharky!
