In Spain you can operate boats up to 6 metres long with an engine of up to 15 HP without any nautical licence, in daylight and within 2 miles of the coast. Four of our Benalmádena boats fall into that bracket: the Octo 47 CC (4.7 m, 6 seats) and the Andrómeda (5.2 m, 6 seats), the easiest to handle on a first outing, and the Nova and Kronos (5.5 m, 8 seats) if you are a group. They all start at €80 per hour and we walk you through the controls at the berth before you leave: no previous experience needed. If you would rather not be at the helm, the Tyrion catamaran always comes with a skipper.
If you hold a boating licence, the Rocinante is your boat: 5.7 metres and up to 7 people, a step up from the licence-free boats. What makes the licence necessary is not the length but the engine: it carries a Selva 115 XRS, well above the 15 HP licence-free limit, so we ask you to show your PER (or equivalent) when you pick the boat up. In exchange you get far more power and range — enough to reach Fuengirola or Torremolinos without watching the clock. From €120 per hour, with the same equipment as the rest of the fleet (Bluetooth audio, GPS and a beach cooler) and a €300 deposit.
Puerto Marina sits right in the middle of the bay, so the moment you cast off you pick a side. The first thing we talk about at the berth is which way to go given your boat and the hours you've booked — not everything fits into a short outing.
What most people do. You leave the harbour and run past Santa Ana, Malapesquera and Torrebermeja, with the Benalmádena skyline and the Mijas hills behind. Anchor off a beach, swim, head back. Any of the four licence-free boats does it comfortably, with no clock-watching.
Towards Málaga you have Bajondillo and La Carihuela a stone's throw away, beach bars and sardine spits in plain sight from the water. It's the liveliest stretch of the bay and the usual pick for a group outing. Keep going and the coast reaches the city — though for that you need the Rocinante and half a day.
In the other direction the coast opens towards Torremuelle, Carvajal and Fuengirola, with Sohail castle standing over the river mouth. It's a quieter run, with smaller coves as you get closer to the Mijas stretch. Three or four hours makes it relaxed.
The bay is regular bottlenose dolphin territory and running into them minutes after leaving is not unusual, especially early on. And from the water you see the whole of Benalmádena stacked vertically: the marina below, Arroyo de la Miel, the cable car climbing to Calamorro and, right at the top, the white village with Colomares Castle and the stupa poking through the trees.

Take the Benalmádena Costa exit off the A-7 or the AP-7, then follow the signs for Puerto Marina. It's about 20-25 minutes from Málaga city, around 40 from Marbella and some 15 from the airport.
The C-1 commuter line, Málaga-Fuengirola, stops at Arroyo de la Miel-Benalmádena, roughly 30 minutes from central Málaga and with a stop at the airport too. From the station it's 15 minutes by bus or taxi to the marina.
Puerto Marina has its own car park next to the berths and there is paid street parking along the seafront. In July and August it's worth arriving with time to spare: the marina is a restaurant hub too and it fills up.
