Puerto Marina is in Benalmadena, 20 minutes from Malaga centre and 40 from Marbella. We have four boats up to 6 metres and 15 HP you can sail with no licence at all, the 115 HP Rocinante for PER holders, and the Tyrion catamaran with a professional skipper. We show you the ropes before you leave and give you a phone number in case you need anything on the water.
You can rent by the hour, half day or full day, with or without a skipper. Skippered boats include fuel; on self-drive rentals the customer pays for fuel.
It's the first question almost everyone looking to rent a boat in Málaga asks, so here it is straight: the Port of Málaga is a commercial and cruise port. Container ships and large passenger vessels dock there — there are no rental pontoons and no fleet of small boats available to the public. The province's rental boats sit in the marinas along the coast, and the closest one to the city is Puerto Marina in Benalmádena: 20 minutes by car from central Málaga and about 15 from the airport. That's why it's our base for everyone setting off from Málaga, and why we tell you upfront instead of pretending to have an office in the city.

In Spain you can operate boats up to 6 metres long with an engine of up to 15 HP without any nautical licence, in daylight and within 2 miles of the coast. At Puerto Marina we have four boats in that bracket: the Octo 47 CC (4.7 m, 6 seats) and the Andrómeda (5.2 m, 6 seats), the easiest to handle if it's your first time, and the Nova and Kronos (5.5 m, 8 seats) for a group. From €80 per hour, no previous experience needed, with a full briefing at the berth before you cast off.
If you hold a PER, the Rocinante carries a 115 HP Selva and 7 seats: from €120 per hour, and it's the one that genuinely gives you the range for a long run across the bay. And if you'd rather not be at the helm, the Tyrion catamaran always sails with a professional skipper, up to 10 people and from €330 for 2 hours, fuel included. On the licence-free boats and the Rocinante fuel is paid separately based on what you use, and the deposit runs from €200 to €300 depending on the boat.
Puerto Marina sits in the middle of the bay of Málaga, so you have coastline on both sides of the berth. How much of it you can cover depends mostly on the boat and the hours you book — here's what we usually suggest.
Eastwards, hugging the coast, you have Benalmádena Costa, Bajondillo beach and La Carihuela. It's the run a short booking gives you on any of the licence-free boats: head out, anchor off a beach, swim and come back without watching the clock.
Seeing La Malagueta, the Farola lighthouse and Gibralfaro cut against the city from the water is one of the best sights in the province — but it's some 20 kilometres of coast away. A licence-free boat won't make it in time; the Rocinante with half a day ahead of you will. We'll work it out with you at the berth depending on your start time and the sea state.
In the other direction the coast opens towards Fuengirola and the Mijas stretch, with smaller, quieter coves than the Torremolinos side. It's the pick if you're after calm swimming and snorkelling rather than a run past the seafront.
Getting there is easier than it looks and you don't need a car: the commuter line linking Málaga with the coast drops you practically at the marina.
Take the A-7 or the AP-7 toll road towards Cádiz, exit at Benalmádena Costa and follow the signs for Puerto Marina. It's about 20-25 minutes without traffic. The marina has its own car park and there is paid street parking along the seafront.
The C-1 Málaga-Fuengirola line runs from María Zambrano and Centro-Alameda and stops at Arroyo de la Miel-Benalmádena in around 30 minutes. From the station it's about 10 minutes by taxi or bus to Puerto Marina. It's the comfortable option if you'd rather not drive back after a day on the boat.
Puerto Marina is about 15 minutes by car from the airport (AGP), and the same C-1 line calls at the terminal. Land in the morning and there's plenty of time to take the boat out the same day.
