Solboat holds no berth in the port of Málaga: our catamaran, the Tyrion, sails from Puerto Marina in Benalmádena, about 20 minutes from central Málaga on the A-7. Up to 10 people, with a professional skipper and fuel included, from €330 for 2 hours.
A catamaran is nothing like a big speedboat: two hulls with a flat deck between them and a bow net to lie on. It doesn't pitch, so you can eat, raise a glass or move about the deck without hanging on. The Tyrion is 7.87 metres and it's the only catamaran in our fleet, which is why the good summer dates go early.
Sailing from Puerto Marina rather than the port of Málaga has more going for it than against: there's parking inside the marina, you step aboard straight from the pontoon, and ten minutes later you're anchored in the bay. It's 20 minutes from central Málaga on the A-7, and a little less from the airport, which sits halfway.
The port of Málaga is a commercial and cruise port; leisure charter on this coast is concentrated in the marinas, and ours is Puerto Marina. That's where the Tyrion is berthed, with our team, our skipper and the rest of the fleet. We'd rather say so before you book than sell you a departure from a quay we're not on. In exchange, the drive is 20 minutes on the A-7, with parking inside the marina and none of the logistics of a big port: you arrive, you park, you board.

These are the three trips people from Málaga ask for most, and the time each one needs. The catamaran isn't a fast boat, so what decides how far you get is the slot you book, not your enthusiasm.
As soon as you clear the harbour mouth, the white buildings of Puerto Marina drop astern and Colomares castle and the Benalmádena stupa appear on the hillside — both far easier to pick out from the water than from the road. You anchor in the small coves under the Torremuelle cliffs with time for a proper swim.
Heading east, back towards Málaga, the coast opens into the long beaches of La Carihuela and El Bajondillo, with Mount Calamorro rising behind. It's the stretch anyone from the city recognises, and the one a three-hour slot covers comfortably.
West past Carvajal and Torreblanca to the mouth of the Fuengirola river, with Sohail castle on the hill above it. Enough time to anchor, eat on board, swim and head home with the sun dropping in front of you. The full outing if you have half a day.

Birthdays, hen and stag dos and get-togethers for ten, with the whole boat to yourselves and a skipper handling the sailing. You bring the food, the drink and the music: there's no bar and no catering, which is exactly why it works out well.
The bay is regular bottlenose dolphin territory and running into them minutes after leaving isn't unusual, especially first thing. From a catamaran deck you see them far better than from a small boat: you're higher up and the whole group can lean over at once.
This coast faces southwest, so at the end of the day the sun drops straight ahead with the Mijas hills behind. The late slot is the most requested of the summer, and you don't need to go far: it looks just as good anchored in the bay.
Between Torremuelle and Carvajal there are small coves that are almost impossible to reach on land. The skipper picks the anchorage according to the swell that day, kills the engine and drops the stern ladder.
As well as hiring by the hour, the Tyrion sails a set programme: sunsets, celebrations, family days out and dolphin watching, skipper included and one price per group.
They all leave from Puerto Marina (Benalmádena), the base that serves Málaga city: about 20 minutes on the A-7, or the C-1 commuter train to Arroyo de la Miel.

On the A-7 it's about 20 minutes from central Málaga and slightly less from the airport; take the Benalmádena Costa exit, then follow the signs for Puerto Marina. By train, the C-1 commuter line (Málaga–Fuengirola) stops at Arroyo de la Miel, about 10 minutes by taxi or bus from the marina.
There is parking inside the marina next to the berths, plus paid street parking along the seafront. In July and August allow an extra twenty minutes: Puerto Marina is a restaurant hub too, and it fills up from midday.
