Looking to rent a boat in Estepona? We won't send you to another port: we sail from Estepona Marina, right in the centre, with the boats moored at berths 212 and 213. You park next to them, step aboard and five minutes later you are cruising past the seafront with Sierra Bermeja behind you.
Anyone can take the Ranieri 500 without a licence — it is the easy pick for a day of coves and swimming. The BMA X199 carries 115 HP: rent it yourself if you hold a PER, or with a skipper if you'd rather switch off, and it has plenty of range to reach Sotogrande or head up towards Marbella. Our own registered fleet, with insurance and safety equipment included. If Estepona is fully booked on your date, we have five more boats 15 minutes away at Puerto de la Duquesa.

In Spain you can operate boats up to 6 metres long with an engine of up to 15 HP without any nautical licence, in daylight and within 2 miles of the coast. In Estepona that boat is the Ranieri 500: 5 metres, 6 seats and a Selva 15/40XS engine, the easy pick for a day of coves and swimming. No previous experience needed — we walk you through the controls, the sailing area and what to do if anything comes up, right there at the berth before you cast off. From €190 for 2 hours, with insurance and safety equipment included, a €300 deposit and fuel paid separately based on what you use.
The BMA X199 is the big boat at this base: 6 metres, 7 seats and a 115 HP Mercury XRS. That power is exactly what takes it out of the licence-free bracket, so there are two ways to rent it. If you hold a PER (or equivalent) you take the helm yourself, from €250 for 2 hours. If you don't — or you'd simply rather ride shotgun — book it with a skipper from €300 for 2 hours: he drives, you pick where to stop. The deposit is €500, and with this boat Sotogrande or Puerto Banús in a single outing is realistic, which is a stretch on the licence-free boat.
Estepona sits right where the Costa del Sol starts to empty out. There are two directions to take from the harbour and both are worth it, so the first thing we talk about at the berth is which way to head given the time you've booked.
Straight out of the harbour, heading west, you have Playa del Cristo: a cove sheltered by the breakwater itself, calm water almost year-round and a sandy bottom. It's where most 2-hour rentals end up. Cut the engine, drop anchor and swim, with Estepona in view and no need to sail for half an hour to find a spot.
Carry on west and the coast empties out: the beaches of Casares, La Sal, San Luis de Sabinillas and, further on, Puerto de la Duquesa and Sotogrande marina. It's the least built-up stretch in the province and the one that pays off if you've booked 4 hours or more. Gibraltar cuts the horizon on clear days.
Towards Marbella you pass Playa del Padrón, Cancelada and the Benahavís coves before reaching Puerto Banús. It's the livelier run and the usual pick for a hen do or a birthday. The BMA X199 does it comfortably in half a day; on the licence-free boat you're better off staying around Estepona.
There are resident bottlenose dolphins off Estepona and running into them on any outing is not unusual, especially early in the morning. And wherever you look, Sierra Bermeja stands behind the town with the reddish tint of its peridotite rock — a backdrop you get from no other harbour on this coast. Exit 146 or 150 off the A-7 towards Estepona centre, then follow signs for the marina. It's about 30 minutes from Marbella, just under an hour from Málaga and around 40 minutes from Gibraltar.
The marina has surface parking next to the pontoons and more spaces along the seafront promenade. Being in the centre of town, you can also simply walk down from almost anywhere in Estepona.
