Solboat has its own base in Estepona marina, berths 212 and 213: we are not sending you to the next town. Two boats, the licence-free Ranieri 500 for 6 guests from 190€ for 2 hours and the BMA X199 for 7, which you can drive yourselves with a PER licence or book with a skipper. Open every day from 09:00 to 21:00.
The marina sits in the middle of Estepona, so the plan more or less builds itself: you park alongside, board at the berth and five minutes later you are anchored off Playa del Cristo, the bay sheltered by the marina breakwater itself. Behind it stands Sierra Bermeja, reddish with peridotite rock, a backdrop you get from no other marina on this coast.
Now the honest part about group size: seven is the maximum in Estepona. If there are more of you, the answer is Puerto de la Duquesa, 15 minutes away on the A-7, where the Sea Ray 33 carries 10 with a skipper. And if you are six or seven, this is the easiest of our three bases: board, sail, and have dinner in the old town without touching the car again.
Both boats include insurance and certified safety equipment. Fuel is billed separately on what you use, including when you book the BMA with a skipper: that is the one difference from our bases with a catamaran. The deposit is 300€ on the Ranieri and 500€ on the BMA. What we do not do is catering, an open bar, a DJ or a photographer, so drinks and nibbles come with you, and there is a supermarket a short walk from the marina. Decorations yes, confetti and glitter no.

Estepona is our small base and it is worth saying before anyone books flights: seven people is the ceiling here. These are the two boats and what each one does.
Six metres, 7 seats and a 115 hp Mercury. Anything over 15 hp needs a PER licence, so either one of you holds it and drives (250€ for 2 hours) or you book it with a skipper and forget about it (300€ for 2 hours). It is the one with the range to push down to Sotogrande or up towards Cancelada.
Five metres with a Selva 15/40XS engine, inside the licence-free bracket: in Spain you can drive a boat of up to 6 metres with an engine of up to 15 hp with no qualification at all, in daylight and within 2 miles of the coast. From 190€ for 2 hours. We run through the controls at the berth and no previous experience is needed.
If there are eight or ten of you, Estepona will not fit you and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Fifteen minutes away on the A-7 is Puerto de la Duquesa in Manilva, where the Sea Ray 33 sails with a skipper and fuel included for 10 guests from 550€ for 2 hours.
The marina is right in town, so almost everything is within reach of a two hour trip.
Just west of the marina lies Playa del Cristo: a bay sheltered by the breakwater itself, usually calm and with a sandy bottom. It is where nearly everyone with a two hour booking drops anchor. Engine off, anchor down, and that is the afternoon.
Keep heading west and the coast empties out: the beaches of Casares, La Sal, San Luis de Sabinillas and, beyond them, Puerto de la Duquesa. It is the least built-up stretch in the province and it pays off if you book four hours or more. On clear days Gibraltar sits on the horizon.
Bring your own chilled bottle and raise it at anchor, with Estepona in view and Sierra Bermeja behind, that reddish massif you cannot see from any other marina on the coast. We do not provide catering, but the setting handles the rest.
The way the Estepona coastline faces makes it one of the best places in the province to watch the sun go down from the water. Late slots sell out early in summer, so if you want one, book with plenty of notice.
There is only one set departure out of Estepona: the private tour to the Strait of Gibraltar, a full day at sea with the boat reserved for your group alone.

The marina is central, so it is a walk from the berth to the old town. Plaza de las Flores and the flowerpot-lined streets are where the restaurants are, and nobody has to move the car to carry on the night.

Take exit 146 or 150 off the A-7 towards Estepona centro, then follow the signs for the marina. It is around 30 minutes from Marbella, just under an hour from Málaga and about 40 minutes from Gibraltar.
The marina has surface parking beside the pontoons and more spaces along the seafront. Being central, plenty of groups simply walk down from their hotel or apartment, which for a hen party is the easiest option of all.
