Solboat has one catamaran, the Tyrion: 7.87 metres, up to 10 people and a professional skipper always on board. It sails from Puerto Marina in Benalmádena (berths 685, 686 and 687), from €330 for 2 hours, fuel included.
We put it that plainly because whole catamaran fleets get advertised on this coast that don't actually exist. Ours is one boat and we know it well: two hulls, a flat deck between them and a bow net where three or four people can stretch out. It doesn't pitch the way a small speedboat does, so you can cross the deck with a drink in your hand and stay dry.
Because it comes with a skipper, you need no licence and no experience. You choose the departure time and roughly where you fancy going; he handles the rest. It's the obvious choice when you're a group, when someone in it gets seasick, or when the plan is to celebrate something and nobody wants to spend the afternoon at the helm.
The Tyrion is €330 for 2 hours, €440 for 3 hours, €550 for 4 hours and €990 for a full 8-hour day. That's the price of the whole boat for up to 10 people — there is no per-head charge. It covers the professional skipper, the fuel, insurance and safety equipment, and there is no deposit, because you're not the one driving.
We're not an events company: no DJ, no photographer, no catering, no open bar. If someone on the Costa del Sol promises you all of that for a flat price, be sceptical. What you can do is bring your own food and drink in cool boxes and plug your music into the boat's sound system. That, plus the four-hour afternoon slot, is all most groups ever need.

This is what people call us about most: ten of you, deck space to move around and a skipper minding the boat while you get on with it. You bring the drinks and the music, and the four-hour afternoon slot leaves room for a swim, a toast and the sunset without rushing anything.
Benalmádena bay is regular bottlenose dolphin territory, and a catamaran deck is a far better vantage point than the cockpit of a small boat: you sit higher, steadier, with room for the whole group to lean over at once. No guarantees, but sightings are frequent, especially first thing in the morning.
This coast faces southwest, so the sun sets straight ahead of you with the Mijas hills cut out behind. Late slots are the ones people repeat: you anchor off Torremuelle, the engine goes quiet and you watch the light go from the bow net.
Between Benalmádena and Fuengirola there are small coves under the Torremuelle cliffs that you can barely reach on foot. The skipper picks the anchorage according to how the swell is running that day, the stern ladder goes down and in you go.

Take the Benalmádena Costa exit from the A-7 or the AP-7, then follow the signs for Puerto Marina. It's about 20 minutes from central Málaga and around 40 from Marbella on the AP-7.
There is parking inside the marina next to the berths, plus paid street parking along the seafront. In July and August allow an extra twenty minutes: Puerto Marina is a restaurant hub too, and it fills up from midday.
